Merit Construction, Inc. is an award-winning Knoxville based General Construction firm with more than 40 years of experience. We currently have a full-time opening for a Project Engineer.
The position requirements include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: The Project Engineer will assist the Project Manager and Superintendent with all aspects of the management and administration of the construction project. This is an entry-level position typically filled by a recent graduate.
Reports to: Project Manager
Works closely with: VP of Project Management, Project Manager, Safety Director, Superintendents
Responsibilities
Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Preconstruction – Work with the project team for the project start-up.
- QAQC – Work with the project team to perform on-site quality control reviews and ensure adherence to project specifications. Ensure that the work is being built to the most up-to-date drawings, specifications, addendum, standards, etc.
- Schedule – Work with the project team on ordering materials needed to successfully execute the project. Assist in developing, maintaining, and revising the project schedule. Monitor production and complete associated reporting. Manage the relationship and work of assigned subcontractors and suppliers.
- Close Out – Work with the project team to organize and complete close-out activities, including the punch list, resolution of warranty issues, O&M manuals, and as-built drawings.
- Project Documentation – Maintain submittal logs and ensure timely receipt and review of submittals and shop drawings. Write, submit, and track RFIs. Gather and prepare documentation for potential disputes and change orders. Take regular jobsite photographs and catalog them in an organized digital filing system. Prepare project status reports. Perform constructability reviews and develop value engineering ideas. Interpret specifications, designs, and drawings and prepare quantity takeoffs. Prepare drawings and sketches to support construction work, change orders, and estimates. Verify work-in-place quantities for invoicing. Ensure craft timecards are completed accurately and verify cost codes to all purchases, timecards, contracts, equipment time, and any other item involving cost.
- Project Meetings – Take meeting notes, prepare and distribute meeting minutes. Attend all Superintendent and Project Management Meetings.
- Safety – Demonstrate, communicate, and reinforce Company safety policies and procedures. Work with the Safety Department to ensure adherence to project safety requirements and that records are accurately maintained.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Preferred bachelor's degree from an accredited construction or civil engineering program
- No prior experience required – this position is designed for new graduates
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Excel and Word; project management and scheduling software knowledge helpful
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and office staff
- Ability to plan and organize work effectively, analyze problems, propose reasonable solutions, make logical decisions, and follow up with appropriate feedback
