Merit Construction, Inc. is an award-winning Knoxville based General Construction firm with more than 40 years of experience. We currently have a full-time opening for an Assistant Superintendent.

The position requirements include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: Provide independent project supervision on small, medium, and large size projects. Assist with overall on-site administrative and technical management in the discipline areas of general construction.

Responsibilities

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Scheduling – Assist the PM and Superintendent in the development of the project schedule. Plan, monitor, and review critical path dates and milestone schedules. Assist with managing the day-to-day activities on the construction project, including creating daily job reports.
  2. Manage Construction in Accordance with Documents – Verify that products and methods used meet or exceed project specifications. Work with owner's representatives and architects to ensure work complies with drawings and specifications. Provide technical assistance including interpretation of drawings, recommending construction methods and equipment. Inspect work in progress to ensure quality workmanship in conformance with contract documents and construction schedules. Understand all contractors' scopes and assure contractors maintain schedules and quality standards meeting contract requirements.
  3. Manage the Construction Site – Responsible for procurement of tools, materials, construction equipment, and certain permanent equipment and delivery at specified times to conform to work schedules. Coordinate work between trades for the good of the project. Assist with contractor disputes, quality control, and schedule coordination. Supervise craft employees and/or other contractors as required. Assume responsibility for productivity of crafts, efficient use of materials and equipment, and contractual performance of the project. Maintain open communication between all contractors to ensure all required materials, equipment, and inspections support project activities and schedule. Conduct organized weekly meetings with subcontractors and owners and record minutes. Perform project close-out and ensure punch list is completed in a timely manner. Secure the jobsite at all times.
  4. Safety – Monitor contractor compliance with project safety program requirements. Assist in following, implementing, and enforcing safety policies including job safety meetings, proper use of safety equipment, and compliance by subs and suppliers. Assist to ensure all onsite personnel comply with project procedures, OSHA, safety program requirements, and work rules. Document all violations, notify project management, and recommend corrective actions as required.
  5. Human Resources – Communicate and reinforce the Company vision, values, and goals. Continually improve proper working techniques through training, processes, procedures, and Merit Construction policies.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Two years of supervisory experience using similar construction methods, equipment, and tools
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Advanced knowledge of construction scheduling
  • Ability to control and supervise large groups
  • Strong organization, multi-tasking, leadership, and decision-making ability
  • Basic computer skills
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction including technology, equipment, methods, engineering, cost, and safety
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and supervisory skills
  • High school diploma or GED and five years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record
